Alcohol

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Alcohol impaired driving is one of the main causes of serious road trauma in NZ
  • Alcohol is a drug known to impair the ability to drive safely
  • 79% of alcohol affected drivers in the region are male, although increasing numbers of women are being stopped with blood alcohol levels over the legal limit
  • Each year, young drivers cause nearly half of all alcohol-related road crashes
  • Sober driving is something that mates do to get each other home safely
  • Alcohol is the most widely used psychoactive (mood changing) readily available drug
  • Regional road safety stakeholders are advocating for a lowering of the legal blood alcohol concentration for driving to 50mg alcohol / 100ml blood for adult drivers. Under the current legislation people are legally permitted to drive whilst alcohol impaired.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO REDUCE THE RISK?

  • Take one for the team – be the sober driver
  • Plan your ride home before you go out
  • Dial-a-driver
  • Take a taxi
  • Text your parents to let them know you need a ride home
  • Never accept a ride from a driver who has been drinking - reduce your risk
