Who We Are
The Waikato Regional Education Group is a cross-agency collective that has been formed to promote road safety education throughout the Waikato region, from the Bombay Hills in the north to the Desert Road in the south. The group is led by Waikato Regional Council in partnership with the NZ Transport Agency, ACC, the New Zealand Police and local authorities. The group works closely with Bettle Advertising; the agency responsible for the creative development of the Reduce the Risk campaign.
Why we're here
The Waikato has a higher proportion of road deaths than any other region in the country -around 70 people die on our roads and hundreds more are seriously injured every year. Every death and injury has a devastating impact on our families, schools, workplaces and communities. The overarching objective of our work is to drive down the regional road toll and improve safety on the roads. Education is just one tool to achieve this, and agencies are also working collaboratively to improve the system through road engineering, regulation and a variety of other means.
About the Campaign
The 'Reduce the Risk' campaign was launched in 2009. The campaign aims to raise public awareness of some of the most critical road safety issues in the Waikato, and in particular highlights some key facts that all road users should know to help keep them safe on the roads.
The consequences of road crashes are painful and often extreme, yet tragically, most crashes are entirely avoidable. The campaign outlines the dangers of the primary causes of death and injury, including speed, alcohol and drugs, fatigue and driver distraction. It provides information and tools to assist individuals and employers in the Waikato, and illustrates that if we each take responsibility we can all help to reduce the risk.
Driving is everyone's responsibility. We can all help to Reduce the Risk.
Data has been sourced from a variety of sources including the Regional Road Safety Strategy for the Waikato region, the New Zealand Transport Agency and Ministry of Transport.
